kniterate shaping workshops

Two intensive days of advanced shaping on the Kniterate

You know the Kniterate, you’ve programmed basic files and knitted panels or even tried first shapes — but at some point, the standard shaping commands in the software are no longer enough.

That is where these workshops begin.

Led by Yolanda Quan from Kniterate Barcelona, the two intensive one-day workshops at berlin textile coop. move beyond basic increases and decreases and dive into the principles behind shaping: how stitches can be moved, how volume can be created intentionally, and how more complex forms can be programmed manually.

The workshops can be booked individually or together. Each day focuses on a different approach and works as a standalone workshop, while the two-day combination offers a deeper understanding of shaping across different knitted structures.

Both days are strongly focused on programming and understanding shaping logic.

The group will work with one Kniterate machine in the space and select together which samples to knit during the workshops. Participants receive the complete set of workshop files so they can continue experimenting and run the files on their own machine afterwards.

Yarn is provided, as well as coffee, tea and snacks.

Workshop Details

DAY 1 — JACQUARD SHAPING

Thursday, 29 October | 10:00–17:30

Shaping jacquard structures comes with its own challenges: feeder positions, carrier directions and multi-colour structures all influence what is technically possible.

We start by looking closely at carrier directions and feeder movement — an essential basis for understanding and troubleshooting jacquard knitting.

From there, we move into:

  • increases and decreases in jacquard structures

  • bind-offs

  • shaping multi-colour knitted pieces

  • neckline shaping

  • manually programming solutions when standard software commands reach their limits

The aim is not only to follow individual techniques, but to develop a better understanding of the logic behind shaping in jacquard — so you can approach more complex designs with greater confidence.

WHO ARE THE WORKSHOPS FOR?

These workshops are intended for participants who already have some experience with Kniterate.

You should feel comfortable working in the Kniterate software and be able to create and program a simple file independently. The focus of both days is on shaping and manual programming, so software basics cannot be covered individually during the workshops.

If you are new to Kniterate or would like a refresher before joining, we recommend taking our Kniterate Basic Workshop on 25 October first.

DAY 2 — ADVANCED / FREE SHAPING

Friday, 30 October | 10:00–17:30

The second workshop focuses on free shaping and more advanced construction techniques.

We work with double-bed and 1x1 structures, exploring fashioned increases and decreases and ways to create clean, flexible edges even when shaping becomes more extreme.

Topics include:

  • fashioned increases and decreases

  • shaping double-bed and 1x1 structures

  • transfer compensation rows

  • working with steep shaping angles

  • hidden and raised fashion marks as a design element

  • experimental constructions where decreases move across the width of the knitted piece rather than remaining only at the edges

Examples such as jersey and 2x2 rib beanies demonstrate how shaping can become an active part of the design rather than simply a technical necessity.

YOUR WORKSHOP LEAD

Both workshop days are led by Yolanda Quan from Kniterate Barcelona.

Bringing her experience working directly with Kniterate, Yolanda will guide participants through the technical logic behind the different shaping methods, with a strong focus on understanding, programming and applying the techniques independently in future projects.
